MISSION

Technical Services helps ensure the effective operation of Auraria Library by acquiring library materials and information resources in a timely manner; by providing effective, accurate tools to assist the Library's users in locating information resources; and by organizing and maintaining information resources in all formats and processing them in a timely manner.

GOALS

Evaluate and improve services and resources for our users

  • Implement more effective, efficient, and economical methods of processing materials
  1. Continue to refine PASCAL processing in response to policy changes
  2. Investigate alternative possibilities for point of order downloading (e.g. PromptCat, Gobi, etc.)
  3. Evaluate possible purchase of services (e.g., OCLC URL sets, TOC, Book jackets, etc.)
  4. Continue to explore additional areas of workflow integration between Cataloging and Acquisitions
  5. Work more closely Systems personnel to develop and modify loaders for records from different sources
  6. Continue to load FTP'd records and optimize existing loads (e.g., Marcive)
  7. Continue to refine processing methods in line with Prospector best practicies
  • Continue to expand the provision of access to electronic resources
  1. Evaluate possible external purchases of records and data (e.g, Science Direct, netLibrary, Web Feet, etc.)
  2. Continue to evaluate workflows relating to licensing and vendor relations
  3. Participate proactively in development of GoldRush and determine how we will use it internally
  4. Continue to explore implications of changing metadata landscape
  • Investigate and possibly implement Millennium Acquisitions module
  1. Determine pre-implementation needs
  2. Determine new procedures
  3. Train all staff involved
  4. Prepare III records to be moved to Millennium
  • Evaluate and develop Millennium Cataloging module
  • Position ourselves to respond to (and thereby mitigate disruptive effects on our operations) proposed major shifts in bibliographic utility architecture, vendor delivery of materials/records, etc. by encouraging:
  1. Reading relevant professional literature
  2. Engaging in departmental/divisional discussion sessions
  3. Inviting speakers, and encouraging other forms of professional development / training

Make the organization more efficient and accountable

  • Continue to identify and refine regular, on-going maintenance of the database.
  • Respond to latest state/campus initiatives concerning personnel evaluation.
  • Continue to improve intra- and extra- division communications and cooperation
  1. Hold division-wide meetings
  2. Improve communications about Technical Services activities
  3. Meet with other departments on issues/projects of mutual concern
  4. Continue to participate in relevant Alliance activities, including consortial purchases, Prospector, GoldRush, and New Directions strategies
  5. Continue to participate in other cooperative ventures (e.g. PASCAL, CDP, etc.)
  • Analyze, evaluate, and continue to develop Intranet and Internet presence
  • Expand support for training and personnel development within Technical Services
  1. Utilize the expertise of MOUS participants by asking them to serve as divisional MS applications resource experts and to develop divisional training sessions
  2. Provide divisional training opportunities for new (or new methods for using) applications, modules, etc. (e.g, Microsoft applications, III Millennium modules, OCLC changes, NACO, etc.)
  3. Encourage participation in relevant library, campus, and professional/community training opportunities
  4. Continue to mount procedural documentation on the Intranet as it becomes fully functional
  5. Develop the Technical Services professional collection
  • Respond, as appropriate, to changes that devolve from library reorganization

Seek financial investment in the Library from external resources

  • Encourage grant writers to include processing costs in grants which include a collection development component
  • Continue to investigate methods of increasing revenue for materials sold at the library book sales
