Library Orientation

Welcome to Auraria Library

The building is big ... a full city block on each floor. And that's not all, the Library is much more than the building and the physical objects in it. The Library includes the people here who will help you learn to do college-level research and it extends into cyberspace, home to many of the subscription databases and websites that you'll need.

Things to do before you leave the building

  • Walk through the building
  • Pick up a bookmark.
    • Why? Lots of info all in one place.
    • How? We leave them around all over, try the Circulation/Checkout desk (Circ desk) or the Information/Reference desk (Ref desk).
  • Check that your record is in the Library database!
    • Why? So you can log in when you are in the Library and also so you can use the Library resources from home. Don't be fooled. Access to all of the powerful research resources purchased for your use are available to anyone who is on-campus, but off-campus access is limited to our students. You will need to log in with your name and student id. And, the only way to add or fix your record is in person, here.
    • How? From home go to the Library homepage and go to "my library account". If your personal info shows up, all is ok. If not come in to the Circ desk the next time you are on campus. Bring your campus photo id. We'll fix it. If you are already here simply try to log in to a Library computer with your campus id and last name. If you get in you are good to go from off campus too. If not come to the Circulation Desk.
  • Familiarize yourself with our website (http://library.auraria.edu/)
    • Why? Every website is different and the Auraria Library website is absolutely packed with info you will need in your career here. Especially learn how to use our library catalog, Skyline, it's how you begin to find anything and is pretty powerful.
    • How? Start clicking or ask a reference librarian

Questions we all asked

  • Is my textbook here? Short answer: 1) Check your syllabus to see if your professor put it on reserve for your class, and look it up in the Reserves section of the library webpage. 2) If it's not there the next place to look is Skyline, the library catalog. You will need to know the full title and the author. 3) Don't see it listed or it's checked out? Try clicking on the Prospector button to see if it's anywhere in the Front Range. If it is you can request it and it will come to Auraria Library in 2-3 working days to be picked up at the Circ Desk. 4) Still no luck? You'll need to buy it ... or convince your professor to put a copy on Reserve for the class. Long answer.
  • Where are the reserves books? From the main entrance go straight ahead and turn left at the computers. Walk down the hall, past the Government Documents. You'll see the Reserves/Audio-Video and Media desk on your left. You'll need to know your class number or your professor's name to look it up in the reserves website
  • Where is classroom LM006 (or LM008)? These are in the Media Center which is not accessible from inside the Library. Directions: From inside the Library 1) go back out the main entrance of the Library where you came in, 2) go around to the back of the Library building (clockwise is a slightly shorter hike), 3) enter through the doors marked Media Center at either end of the building and go downstairs. The classrooms are at the west end of the long hall.
  • Can I use my email here? Yes, both in the main part of the Library and in the lab, the Computer Commons.
  • Where can I type/print a paper/file? Beginning this fall all the Library computers that are reserved for students as well as the Computer Commons will have word processing and spreadsheet programs. Remember printing in the Library is 15 cents a page. Each of the schools also has at least one computer lab that may be used by their students and often offer some free printing. Lab locations and hours.
  • Where are the copy machines? There is a group of copy machines in the Periodicals Reading Room and another set near Reserves. The cost is 15 cents a page.
  • Can I use the Library from home thru the internet? This depends on whether or not you are a currently enrolled student, faculty or stafff at either CCD, MSCD or UCD and ... what you want to do (search the catalog - yes; find and read journal or newspaper articles from our online databases - yes; read electronic books - yes; read materials placed on e-reserve - yes; check out a book - no; request materials from other libraries be sent to Auraria for you to pick up here - yes).
  • Do you have job openings for students? Yes! Apply at the Library Administration Office located back right of the second floor of the Library.
  • Not answered here? Ask at the Ref Desk, click on ask a librarian on the Library homepage, or try the main Library FAQ.
