INSTRUCTION PROGRAM POLICIES

The instruction for your class can be customized to meet the research needs and skill level of the students. Subject-level instruction will be offered to all lower and upper division classes that use research methods or require a library unit, e.g. education, biology, criminal justice, UCD freshman seminars, etc.

Procedure for requesting library instruction:

  • Fill out the "schedule a class" form (we request you use this even if you call to schedule)
    or
  • call the librarian who regularly does your instruction
    or
  • call the Instruction Office assistant at 556-3683.

Advance notice: Please provide at least one week prior to the date on which the instruction is desired

Faculty attendance: The faculty member requesting instruction must be present for the library session.

FAQ

  • How do I know if my class is scheduled?

You will be notified directly by the instruction office once your class has been scheduled. The office will confirm the date, time, and librarian contact information. If you do not hear from us, we may not have received your request! You can also check the library instruction calendar to see if if your class is listed on the appropriate day.

  • What if I or the librarian become ill or have a last minute emergency?

Just as with your regular classes, the library class will need to be canceled (we can reschedule) in the event of illness or emergency. We will post a note on room 245 to inform the students.

  • What if a librarian cannot teach my class on any of the dates I provide?

For any number of reasons, the librarian may refuse the request and refer it to the Instruction Office. In this case, the librarian will contact the Instruction Office explaining the reasons (examples: schedule conflict, vacation, another librarian's area of instruction). This prevents the request from being referred back to the original librarian.

Assignment of Instruction

When an instruction requests goes through the Instruction Office, librarians will be asked to take the assignment in the following order:

  • the librarian with the most expertise in the field will be asked first, if the librarian is available
  • if the librarian is not available, another librarian with experience in the area will be asked
  • every attempt will be made to fill any reasonable request, but if no librarian is prepared or able to take the class, the Instruction Office will offer an alternative (i.e., a basic demonstration and a relevant handout) or the request will be refused.

Visiting School Policy

1) Instruction on research in a college library will benefit your students! We welcome the opportunity to meet your class and provide a session on doing research in our library.

2) Instructors or group leaders need to notify Auraria Library by telephone or in writing, through the Library Instruction Office, at least one week in advance.

3) Visiting instructors or group leaders are responsible for their students' assignments. If Reference material is needed for the assignment, the Reference Department should be notified at least one week in advance.

4) Classes and groups must be accompanied by an adequate number of responsible adults who have been familiarized with the students' assignments. (One adult for every 15 high school students and one adult for every 10 junior high students). Instructors are responsible for their students' conduct in the Library and if it is disruptive the group may be asked to leave the building.

5) Groups are asked to make library trips during Auraria's semester breaks, if possible. If not, groups should schedule visits between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.

6) Public computers cannot be reserved for classes. Adults who accompany the class should be prepared to assist students with their work. Outside users can be bumped when there is a significant back-up of Auraria students.

If there are any questions about the use of the Auraria Library by visiting schools, please contact Library Instruction Office at 303-556-3683.

Classroom (room 245) use policy

The Jerry B. Robinson Library Instruction Lab, Room 245, may be used by students and faculty affiliated with any of the three institutions on the Auraria Campus or by faculty and staff of the Auraria Library under the following guidelines.

  • For Library Instruction.

Room 245 may be reserved by library faculty or staff for the purpose of holding Library Instruction sessions and demonstrations. Reservations may be made by contacting the Library Instruction Assistant. The room is available for instruction and demos at all hours that the library is open with the exception of Wednesdays, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, which is reserved for library meetings. Instruction sessions may still be scheduled at that time on Wednesdays if there are no library meetings. At all other times, Instruction sessions are given priority over all other uses of the room. The room may not to be reserved for use by campus faculty and/or students for regular classes, exam sessions or other non-library initiated or related purposes.

  • For Library Related Business.

The room may be reserved and used by Auraria Library faculty and staff for vendor presentations, search candidate presentations and library meetings. The room may also be used for other non-instruction related meetings in which one or more library faculty members are present. This would include meetings of committees, task forces or professional organizations that a library faculty member is working with to fulfill any part of his/her primary job or research and service responsibilities.

In most cases, reservation of room 245 for these purposes is secondary to the scheduling of library instruction sessions especially during the peak instruction season which typically spans the 2nd to the 10th week of a semester. During this time, non-instruction meetings may be scheduled up to a week in advance but no sooner than that.

  • Care of the Equipment

Library faculty or staff who use the computers and other equipment in room 245 should contact either the Head of Library Instruction or the Library Instruction Assistant to receive instruction on the proper use of the equipment prior to using the room. All equipment is the responsibility of the library faculty or staff during the time they have reserved the room. No food or drink is permitted in this room at any time.
