Historical Sketch______________
On January 15, 1934, Colorado governor Edwin O. Johnson established the Colorado State Planning Commission. The objective of the Commission was to formulate a suitable plan for the future development of the State. The Commission held its first meeting in the State Office Building on January 19, 1934, during which John T. Barnett was elected Chairman and Edward Foster Secretary. One of the Commission's first official actions was to appoint Irvin J. McCrary, Regional Advisor to the National Planning Commission and a local city planner and landscape architect, as Consultant to the Commission. Over the next decade the Commission was involved with key state issues. It worked with many agencies including the federal Public Works Administration, the state Water Conservation Board and Highway Department. Topics of discussion indluded zoning districts, public land, land use, water conservation, public buildings for penal, charitable and educational institutions and erosion control. Due to population and government growth, state planning in Colorado today is handled by various state agencies and coordinated into a master plan by the Office of State Planning and Budgeting, Office of the Governor.
The Collection consists of the minutes of the Colorado State Planning Commission from 1934 to 1940. The earlier items record the first meetings of the Commission. As the Commission matured, it began to respond to and initiate reports on a variety of issues relating to the future growth of the State. By 1940, the Commission was recognized as an important body in State planning directives. The Commission continued to function after 1940, althugh this collection stops at that point.
