HISTORICAL SKETCH________________________________________________

The Denver Landmark Preservation Commission was created in 1967 by the
Mayor and City Council as an outgrowth of the Denver Planning Board's
Urban Environment Subcommittee headed by Helen Millett Arndt. Upset by
the number of historic buildings being destroyed to make room for new
development in the 1950's and 1960's, Arndt wanted the city to
form a commission charged with identifying and preserving Denver's
historic and architectural treasures. As a result, Denver now has a Landmark
Preservation Commission. This commission is comprised of nine members
appointed by the Mayor. Two of the commissioners are nominated by the Denver
Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, one name is set forward by
the Denver Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects,
two by the Chairperson of the Denver Planning Office, and two by the
President of the Colorado Historical Society. As of July, 2002 the
commission has confered historic landmark status to 304 structures
within the city. The Commission has also created 41 historic districts
to help maintain the city's character.
