The Author and Journalist was a journal for writers and by writers. Authors wrote articles in which they discussed form, style, technique, how to submit articles to editors, and how to deal with them, etc. There was a "Literary Market Tips" column, a "Handy Market List", a special section for "Trade, Technical, and Class Journal.." writers, and many advertisements for typewriters, literary agents, books, etc. There were brief articles of special interest to writers in a column called "The S.T.C. News" (Simplified Training Course.) Prominent authors were sometimes discussed and criticized.
With the exception of the one novel - Castaways of Plenty - all of the material in this collection is dedicated to serving the struggling writer. Helps for Student Writers discussed plot, style, climax, characterization, technique, viewpoint, suspense, rhythm, etc. The Twelve Basic Themes discussed them and plot and listed the twelve themes that Mr. Hawkins perceived as being inherent in all stories. Mr. Hawkins also wrote The Cowled Menace (1930), How to Write a Screenable Plot in Your Fiction Story; A Course (1925); and The Technique of Fiction: A Basic Course in Story Writing (1948).
