The Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award Committee
Records collection was donated to the Auraria Library
Archives in 1995. The donation was initiated by Ellen
Fisher, head of the MYCVA Committee archives sub-committee
at the time of the donation. The papers were processed by
Jeffrey M. O’Leary under the direction of Francis H. Tapp
during the 1997 Summer semester.
Property rights are held by the Auraria Library
Archives and Special Collections Department. Photcopies may
be made for purposes of scholarly research.

In February 1976, the Commission on Community Relations
of the City and County of Denver, United Bank of Denver and
the Rocky Mountain News announced plans to start a program
to honor outstanding community volunteers in the metropolitan area.
The first award was presented March 10, 1976, to Bertha Simon.
Mrs. Simon was given the award for knitting more than 1,000 pairs of
children’s mittens for the Head Start program.
On January 20, 1977, at its first meeting of the year, the
Community Volunteer Awards Committee voted to rename the award the
Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award, after the Executive Director
of the Denver Commission on Community Relations. Yasui served as
Executive Director from 1967 through 1983. Yasui was involved in
dozens of community organizations in the Denver area.
The Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award is a program designed
to honor and encourage volunteers in the Denver metropolitan area. Every
month, an individual is selected by the award committee on the basis of
constructive contributions to the community. These contributions are unique
and/or outstanding and have been relatively unrecognized.
Award winners receive an official certificate of appreciation,
a cash award to a non-profit organization of the volunteer’s choice,
recognition by Denver’s Mayor and a profile in the Rocky Mountain News.
The award is presented at a public ceremony.
Scope and Contents____________________________
The Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award Committee Records
collection was donated to the Auraria library in 1995. The collection
contains material dating from 1976 to the present.
The majority of the Minoru Yasui Community Volunteer Award
Committee Records collection consists of 18 binders, organized by year,
that document the annual activities surrounding the MYCVA. Each binder
contains material divided into several categories. Examples include:
“General”, “Correspondence”, “News and Notes” (a newsletter), “Honorees”
and “Publicity”. Within these categories can be found information on
MYCVA committee members, nominees and monthly winners of the MYCVA,
history of the award, minutes from committee meetings, newspaper articles
about awardees, printed programs for the award presentations, and photos.
The collection includes a binder from 1994 MYCVA committee
member Rutherford Witthus. In addition to material similar to that
found in the other binders, it includes additional information
specifically for members of the committee - such as a “Resource
Book for Committee Members”.
The collection also contains 6 photo albums that document MYCVA
award ceremonies/events, and enlarged photographs that were used as posters
by the MYCVA committee.
