HISTORICAL NOTE
In 1880, Adolph Roederer left Germany with his two brothers
and set off for America. He was just 18 years of age. Adolph arrived
in Pennsylvania and began work at a local bakery. From here he traveled
west with one brother while the other, F.X. Roederer, stayed behind
to work at a barber shop.
Adolph Roederer arrived in Denver, Colorado in 1886 and began
to put the money he had saved while working in Pennsylvania into use.
In 1888, Roederer found a partner, John Schwarz, and the Roederer and
Schwarz Bakery soon opened for business. Just two years later Roederer
would become the sole owner of the bakery, and the name was changed to
Adolph Roederer Bakery and Confectionery. The bakery would make free
deliveries anywhere in town, and this was often to the more prominent
restaurants of the time. Included on his customer list were The
University Club, The Navarre, Lehners, and The Denver Club. Because of
his upper class clientele, Adolph Roederer soon became one of the most
successful and respected businessmen in the Denver area.
It was around 1890 that Roederer met his wife Marie Johnk
Roederer. Louise, the couples first child, was then born in 1892.
(Louise died during the flu epidemic in 1918). It would not be until
1900 that Adolph and Marie’s second child, Adelheid, was born. Both
of the Roederer children would receive their education at St. Elizabeth’s
School.
After owning the bakery for 33 years, Adolph Roederer retired
in 1921. Roederer died in 1932.
