BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH_______

Gaston Gilbert Daniel Save was born in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, Lorraine, France, on August 22, 1844, to Louis Etienne Onesime Save and Sophie Julie Amelie Zetter. Save’s contemporaries, including Henri Bardy and Ferdinand Genay, held him in some esteem as an architectural illustrator and historian. After an 1864 bout with scarlet fever, Save plunged himself into literary and historical life as a student in Paris. He supported the Paris Commune, a socialist government that existed from March 26 – May 30, 1871. The Commune and its supporters, the Communards, were toppled by an army from Versailles, and 30,000 Communards and other sympathetic citizens were executed. 7,000 were exiled. Very few escaped outright, and one of these was Save, who fled to Switzerland and returned to France after several years. He settled again in Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, and worked to preserve monuments and notable architecture in the region. In 1891 he also exhibited 300 pieces of his art work in the Exposition des Beaux-Arts in Nancy. His most notable restorations and studies were made concerning the Croix de Bourgnone, the home said to belong to Joan of Arc, the frescoes of the Church of Saint Clement, and the cathedral of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. His most enduring literary endeavor was the Patriote vosgien: journal républicain progressiste, which he founded in 1881. Upon his death due to heart failure on July 20, 1901, Save was honored with a retrospective tribute authored by Henri Bardy in the journal La Lorraine.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS_______

The collection includes subject notes and commentary, materials relating to renovation ceremonies, manuscripts of works by Save, news clippings relating to Save and his work, publications by Save and contemporaries, and dozens of pieces of Save’s artwork. Most papers were created or published between 1880 and 1900, but the earliest item is dated 1773 and the latest is 1901. Many of the items pertaining to several categories relate to the Croix de Bourgnone and the cathedral at Saint-Dié-des-Vosges. Subject files include many of Save’s notebooks, which have historical notes and sketches concerning the Lorraine region’s cathedrals, and some journals containing personal reflections on area politics. The author also contributed architectural illustrations to other works, which have a separate category. Correspondence is scant, but does have some notes relating to Frank Mason’s Harper’s Weekly article. There are set notes from a theatre piece designed by Save, and over 70 sketches on various media. Several items are undated and therefore are not included in the timeline.
