Getting Ready for Research

The starting place for your library research is with the "research question." Think about your topic:

  • How much do you know about your topic?

  • What are some keywords for your topic?

  • Is your topic covered by the News Media?

  • What personal interest do you have in your topic?

  • Do you have any strong views about your topic?

 

Evaluating Books



1. Can you understand the words in this book?

2. Read a few paragraphs

Does the book cover your topic?

____ Yes I found my topic in Table of Contents

____ Yes, I found my topic in the Index

____ No - I did not find my topic in this book

3. Find the section of the book that has your topic?

4. Does this book give you enough information?

  • A paragraph?
  • Several pages?
  • A whole chapter?
  • Too much information?


 

Article Searching: [ Research Many Journals At Once]

You can search for articles using databases or indexes. Many provide the full text of the article. Most databases can be accessed 24/7.

Evaluating Magazine and Journal Articles

  1. Does it cover your topic?
    Read the first few paragraphs

  2. Can you understand the words?

  3. How current is the information? Look at the date.

  4. Is an older journal article ok? .....Too old to be useful?

  5. Would you use this journal article for your project?
