Is your textbook in Auraria Library?

Auraria Library does not have a collection of textbooks used in classes, but we may have your textbook or be able to help you get it.

Some teachers put a copy of the textbook on reserve; if so, you will probably see the words “on reserve” or “at the reserve desk” on your syllabus. The teacher may also have other class materials on reserve instead of the text or in addition to it. If your teacher said your book was on reserve or if you think it is on reserve, go to the section of this guide called Finding Reserve Materials. If you hope it is in the library but not on reserve, skip to the section called Looking for Your Textbook in the Library.

Finding Reserve Materials

  • choose “Course Reserves/Videos.”
  • next, choose “Course Reserve Pages for Electronic, Traditional, or Video On the Auraria Library homepage, look for “Do It.” From the “Do It” list, Reserves.” Then choose to search by your instructor’s name, by the name of the class, or by the name of the department.

Searching Reserves by Instructor’s Name

  1. If you search by instructor’s name, look for the name in alphabetical order. When you locate the name, click on it. This will take you to a list of classes for which the teacher has provided reserve material. Click on the name of your class.
  2. Read the agreement material and accept it.
  3. On the next screen, click on the “Materials for….” line, then click on “Get more information….” The window that appears next contains the information you need. Enlarge the window so that you can read all the information.
  4. Course materials may be online or in books or folders. If the item is online, you will be able to click on the link, which will open the item so that you can print it.
  5. If what you are looking for is a book or in a folder, you will see either a call number (for a book owned by the library) or a code, for example,
    GRO5 P2.
  6. Write down the code or call number and take it to the Reserve Desk,
located on the north side of the library, halfway between the coffee stand and the Computer Commons. Give the number to the staff person at the desk, and he or she will get the item for you. Notice that reserve material is checked out for very short periods of time, usually 2 hours, 4 hours, 24 hours, or two days. Fines are charged for material that is not returned promptly.

Searching Reserves by Course Number (your class) or Department

You may search by course number, if you know it, or by a department. To search by department, look for the school and department (example: MSCD Music). All MSCD Music classes which use Reserve materials will be listed. Once you find the class, follow the instructions for Searching by Instructor’s Name (above).

Looking for Your Textbook in the Library

If your textbook is not on reserve, the Library might own it. To find out,

  1. Go to the library home page. In the center, you will see the words,
Find a Book ” Type in the title of your textbook. (The title of the textbook is usually on the syllabus or it may be found at the bookstore. To look up the exact title of your text, go to http://www.aurariabooks.com/, click on Textbooks, then on “Order your Textbooks". From there you will be able to look up your class by institution.)
  2. If the title you typed in brings up a list of books, first check to be sure the
author is correct. Titles like College Chemistry or Intermediate Algebra are fairly common. Be sure the one you pick is by the author you want.
  3. Be sure you have the right edition of the textbook. For a week or two, using
the 4th edition rather than the 5th might be all right, but remember that having the most recent edition means having the most recent information on your subject and having the same exercises as the rest of the class.
  4. If the library has the book you want, click on the title of the book to get the full
record. This record should tell you that the book is on the 2nd floor (meaning it
can be checked out), what the call number is (the blue letters and numbers),
and if the book is available. If the record says the book is available, you
should be able to find it in its place on the second floor and check it out, using
your student ID as your library card. Checkout is 4 weeks for under-
graduates, 60 days for grad students. A book can not be renewed if
someone else has put a hold on it.

If Auraria Library doesn’t have the book or the edition of the book that you want, or if the book has been checked out, go to Prospector. Click the “Search Prospector” icon in the row of keys right below the Auraria Library logo. This will allow you to search the combined catalogs of more than 23 nearby libraries.

  1. If Prospector has the book you want, click on the line (in blue letters) that says
“[number] of Prospector libraries own this item.” Check the list of owner
libraries to be sure that at least one copy is available. If a copy is available,
click on the blue letters that say “REQUEST THIS ITEM.”
  2. Change the name of the library where you want the book sent to “Auraria
Library” and press “enter.” On the next screen, type in your name and
    student number and press “enter.”
  3. Watch for the next screen to be sure your order was successful. If not, check
with the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk to see why.
  4. In 3 business days, the book should arrive at the Circulation (check out) Desk.
Your CCD, MSCD, or CU-Denver ID card is your library card.

Textbooks are not available through InterLibrary Loan via WebZap .
