NetLibrary eAudiobooks FAQ

What are NetLibrary eAudiobooks?

NetLibrary eAudiobooks are unabridged recordings of books read by professional readers.  The Auraria Library collection covers subject areas appropriate to an academic library collection.

Finding NetLibrary eAudiobooks.

~ The NetLibrary eAudiobooks are on the Auraria Library's NetLibrary web page (which is also the gateway to more than 16,000 full-text online ebooks).  Each eAudiobook title is also cataloged in the Library's catalog, Skyline.

~ A quick path to NetLibrary from the Library's home page is: in the Find a Book search box type in netlibrary and click go. Click on Connect to http://0-www.netlibrary.com.skyline.cudenver.edu/

~ Restrict your search to audiobooks only by clicking on eAudiobooks on the top right of the NetLibrary opening page.

Downloading a NetLibrary eAudiobook so You Can Listen to It on a Non-Library Computer or Transport the File to a Another Device.

Overview:

NetLibrary eAudiobooks are designed to be used outside the Library and downloaded to your home, office, or other non-Library computer. *

The eAudiobooks can be downloaded and played on desktop, laptop, or other devices supporting Windows Media Player version 9.0 or greater.

For convenient listening, eAudiobooks may be transferred from Windows Media Player to any portable devices listed on the Plays for Sure Web page including devices from Archos, Creative Labs, Rio, SanDisk, Toshiba, Samsung and others.  Device types include portable music players, portable media centers, Pocket PCs, and select smartphone devices.

Note that NetLibrary eAudiobooks cannot be downloaded to iPods or to Mac computers since NetLibrary uses DRM-protected Windows Media Audio (WMA) files which are currently not supported by the iPod and Mac.

~ Once you've located a title you'd like to hear click on "Download this eAudiobook."

~ If you are on an Auraria Library computer:

Choose: "Check Out (No Download. Only license to play file)." You will be prompted for your name and password which is obtained through free registration on the NetLibrary site.  If you've never used NetLibrary through the Auraria Library click on the underlined link "Create a Free Account" to register. You will only need to do this once. The account is needed in order to download and listen to eAudiobooks.  You can then 'check out' the eAudiobook. Now the book will be ready for download and transfer when you go to the NetLibrary page on a non-Library computer, log in, and look at your Checked Out book(s). *

~ If you are on a home, office computer, or other non-library computer:

Choose '"Check Out and Download CD quality" if you are planning to transfer the book to a portable listening device or have high speed Internet access.  "Radio quality" provides faster download speed and is ideal for users with dial-up connections but note that if you download the title in 'radio quality' the book cannot be transferred to a portable device. (Hint: Downloads can take an hour or more if you have dial-up access. Set the download up before you go to sleep and it will be waiting for you in the morning!)

When the download process begins, a dialog box will open that asks "Do you want to open or save this file?"

~~Choose to "Save" the audiobook on your personal computer if you would like to pick the destination for the file (i.e. your hard drive or a USB drive) so that you can find it if you decide to transfer the file to a portable device.

~~If you select "Open" NetLibrary will download the eAudiobook title and automatically launch your media player. Windows Media Player can be downloaded for free here if it's not already on your computer or device.  Click the "Play" button to listen.

~ Before you can transfer an eAudiobook to a portable device, you must open it at least once on your computer. Open the audiobook from within Windows Media Player (or another player you have selected that is compatible).  Click here for instructions on transfering an eAudiobook to a portable listening device using Windows Media Player. Instructions included with your portable device may also be helpful. (Note: The audiobook is tied to whatever computer you open it on. If you want to transfer the book to a portable device it will need to be transferred from the computer you opened it on; that is the computer the book is licensed to.)

*eAudiobooks may not be downloaded onto Auraria Library computers since the book would need to reside on that computer.  This is not possible in the Library because of the way our system is configured. The drive the eAudiobook would be downloaded to is erased each night. The book would then not be accessible until the three week check-out period had expired. It is also not possible at this time to download an eAudiobook to a USB drive using a Library computer for transfer to a non-Library computer due to the configuration of the Library PC's.

Check-Out Info.

~ Up to 10 books per user may be downloaded (checked out) to any one user at any time.  You may check out additional titles when the license for a currently downloaded eAudiobook expires.

~ eAudiobooks check out for 3 weeks.

~ eAudiobooks may be renewed once.  Click on the eAudiobook title and choose "Renew your checkout for 21 days."  When a title has expired it will no longer play.

~ Titles already checked out cannot be reserved but a patron can ask to be notified when an eAudiobook that is checked out becomes available.  When a title is in use you'll see the message "Request to be notified when this title becomes available" when you try to download the title. The title cannot be automatically checked out to the person asking to be notified; the title must be manually checked out when the title becomes available.

~ eAudiobook titles cannot be checked in, so, for example, if a patron is done with a title in 2 weeks, the next user will still need to wait an additional week before being able to check the title out.
