When do you need clearance?

When you have analyzed your resource and found none of the copyright exemptions apply to your situation, you will need to get copyright clearance.

Here are some hints and references to help with the clearance process.

• Collective rights organizations will provide this service for a fee. (1)
• Contact the owner, meet another expert in your field. (1)
• Get it in writing. (1)
• Here is a model permission process. (2)

• Where are they?
• What if they don't answer?

Alternatives

• Link to the work if it is available online through the Library (for assistance in locating an electronic version of your resource, contact a librarian Lorrie Evans or Gayle Bradbeer)
• Use just a small part of the work to bring your use of it back into fair use
• Locate equivalent materials to link to by searching the Library's electronic resources (ebooks, books, online journals, article databases)
• Put materials on Reserve at the Library, both onsite and online reserves are available
• Use open access materials
