Pilot Project for New Video-on-Demand Service in Reserves/Audio-Video Media Services
On September 2, 2008, Reserves/Audio-Video Media Services will begin a pilot project of a video-on-demand service. The project will be for 60 days ending on November 2, 2008. This service, called C-Labs, is provided by Cdigix. Cdigix custom designed C-Labs to be an easy and efficient digital media solution for college/university administrators, faculty, and students by providing schools with all the tools they need to post and maintain rich digital media online while complying with copyright policies.
C-Labs empowers educators by extending the ability to utilize media in their curriculum like never before. Media management, digital rights management, encryption, licensing, distribution, and authentication are completely automated by the C-Labs service.
Faculty Benefits:
- C-Labs enables faculty to easily assign videos and other rich digital media as part of the course curriculum for on-campus or online courses.
- C-Labs restricts access to copyrighted media to only those students who are enrolled in a particular course and for a specified time period as determined by the professor.
Student Benefits:
- C-Labs enhances opportunities for visual learning and contributes to improved student performance and success through on-demand access to a wealth of resources.
- C-Labs provides students with the flexibility of downloading and viewing assigned media directly on their own computers, which enables much better quality, greater security and much lower bandwidth requirements than streaming.
Library Benefits:
- C-Labs meets technical compliance requirements of the TEACH Act by controlling how and when users can see specific content to ensure files are both protected and secure.
- C-Labs allows an institution to digitize and archive its media assets in a central location and present all media files in a uniform fashion, regardless of the original source (VHS, DVD, and film)
- C-Labs alleviates the burden of keeping multiple copies of audio and video media on reserve.
Copyright
In 2002, the Copyright Act was extended by the TEACH Act to allow nonprofit educational institutions the ability to transmit content digitally for educational purposes. However, the TEACH Act mandated a series of requirements which made it very difficult for colleges/universities to utilize the technology on their own.
That problem is resolved with C-Labs: A content platform for controlling the digital distribution of content which is compliant with the transmission requirements of the TEACH Act.
More specifically, the TEACH Act dictated a number of restrictions to govern the transmission of copyrighted works, including:
- The material must be legitimately acquired under copyright law, including Fair Use provisions;
- The transmission of material must implement reasonable technological measures so as to prevent further copying and reproduction;
- Material can only be transmitted to students actually enrolled in the class;
- The transmission of copyrighted works must occur at the direction of, or under the supervision of an instructor and the transmission can only take place as part of a class session.
C-Labs is compliant with all the above transmission requirements, thus allowing colleges/universities to put video and audio assets online like never before, as they so desire under copyright law including Fair Use and TEACH Act provisions.
The Project
During the trial, we will be working with 25 video/DVD titles; this list can be seen below. If you will be using any of these videos during the trial period, please contact Judith Valdez directly at 303-556-4999 or judith.valdez@ucdenver.edu , if you would like to participate in this pilot project and try this service in your classroom and/or with your students during the fall semester. We will be glad to show you how to use the system. We would also be glad to discuss with you how the video-on-demand service works if you would like to have this information. At the end of the pilot project, after input from the faculty, the Auraria Library administrative team will hold discussions and make a final decision regarding the purchase of this service on a permanent basis. The discussions will include funding options for the purchase of this new service.
