Working Smarter, Not Harder: Teaching Students and Staff with Screencasting

In all areas of the librarianship one constantly hears, “How did you do that? That thing you showed me on the computer last week?” Even if you’re lucky enough to remember what you showed this particular patron or colleague, you probably don’t remember the context, or exactly how you demonstrated the concept. Three librarians from different departments -- instruction, systems and technical services -- have used screencasting to save time and promote consistency in their teaching.

Auraria Library serves over 40,000 students and faculty members at three very different institutions of higher education in downtown Denver, Colorado -- University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and Community College of Denver. Auraria’s librarians and staff also come from diverse backgrounds and generations. The barrage of questions from all sides is fast and furious. Fortunately, through screencasting, librarians can demonstrate, save, and share answers to questions of all levels of difficulty. Short, quick, and easily accessible tutorials make teaching and learning more effective for staff and students. See what has worked and what has not for librarians in three different specialties: instruction, systems, and technical services.
