What’s in it?
Black Women Writers offers literature and essays on feminist issues written by authors from Africa and the African diaspora. The collection documents Black women creating unique identities and movements, presenting women’s perspectives on the diversity and development of Black people generally, and illustrates the evolution of Black feminism.
Why should you use it?
Black women experience an intersection of anti-Black racism and sexism which, when taken together, create more exclusionary systems than what Black men or white women experience. In response to this, many Black women have created especially incisive, devastating, and beautiful art and scholarship.
Who should use it?
This database would be useful for anyone interested in learning about Black feminist thought, creativity, and critique. It may be of particular interest to ethnic studies, sociology, political science, social work, gender studies, and human services students, faculty, and staff. While everyone will benefit from listening to Black women, men and white people in particular should use this resource.
Why use a database?
When you use a specific database, rather than a search engine or discovery tool, you often can find more relevant sources. For example, subject databases include sources about that subject only, rather than a general search engine or discovery tool that includes information about everything. This way you don’t have to wade through thousands of irrelevant results!
