Auraria Creates event spotlights campus scholars and creatives
On April 21 and 22, the Auraria Library will showcase diverse faculty and student talent representing CU Denver, MSU Denver, and the Community College of Denver as part of Auraria Creates, the Library’s annual celebration of creativity and scholarship.
This marks the third consecutive year that the Auraria Library is inviting the entire community into its Collaborative Classroom (Room 116) to be nourished and enchanted by great work occurring campuswide.
Auraria Creates this year will have two sessions—both free, and both capped off by a reception with light refreshments. These sessions are:
Monday, April 21: Faculty Spotlight
Starting at 11 a.m., and featuring:
- Jasmine Harris, PhD, professor and chair of Africana Studies, MSU Denver, on her 2024 book Black Women, Ivory Tower: Revealing the Lies of White Supremacy in American Education—a first-of-its-kind exploration of what it means to be a Black woman in higher education
- Elizabeth Pugliano, PhD, senior visual arts instructor, CU Denver, on History, Practice, and Pedagogy: Empathetic Engagements in the Visual Arts, an anthology co-edited by Pugliano that probes how works of art not only appeal to empathic sensibilities, but might play an active role in developing capacities for empathy in viewers
- Dennis Rudnick, PhD, assistant professor of elementary education, MSU Denver, on his book Resisting Divide-and-Conquer Strategies in Education: Pathways and Possibilities, which dissects ideological and sociopolitical contexts of divide-and-conquer, showing how these mechanisms shape exclusionary policies and practices, and outlining efforts of resistance and liberation
- Sandy Guinn, MFA, professor of art, Community College of Denver, on My Sketchpad, her recently published resource to help students overcome traditional barriers to extemporaneous drawing and creativity.
Tuesday, April 22: Student Spotlight
Starting at 9:30 a.m., and featuring:
- Flynn Condit, MSU-Denver political science undergraduate, on his photodocumentary project The Periphery, chronicling economic stagnation in countries once part of the former Soviet Union; his exhibition will feature special guest speaker Richard Moeller, PhD, professor of political science, MSU Denver
