Featured Database: BBC Shakespeare Plays

You can use databases to easily find organized collections of articles, journals, news, streaming videos, primary sources, data, and more!

  • This month, we highlight one of our favorite video streaming databases: BBC Shakespeare Plays.

What’s in it?

  • This database contains an exciting collection of performances of Shakespeare plays, all with closed captions available and produced by the esteemed British Broadcasting Corporation. You can search for and view 37 different full-length plays, including Romeo and Juliet, Othello, and the Taming of the Shrew. You can use keywords to search both the captions and chapters of the plays, and each title includes a full transcript.

Why should you use it?

  • BBC Shakespeare Plays provides detailed, full-length access to 37 of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays. Each aspect of the dramatic structure of every play (acts, scenes, character names) is explicitly marked, making this database especially useful for scholarly and literary analysis.

Who should use it?

  • Anybody interested in the performing arts, Shakespeare, literature, and a captivating story!

Why use a database?

When you use a specific database, rather than a search engine or discovery tool, you often can find more relevant sources. For example, subject databases include sources about that subject only, rather than a general search engine or discovery tool that includes information about everything. This way you don’t have to wade through thousands of irrelevant results!
