Featured Database: Indigenous Newspapers in North America

You can use databases to easily find organized collections of articles, journals, news, streaming videos, primary sources, data, and more!

If you only access one database this month, make it this one: Indigenous Newspapers in North America

What’s in it?

This collection contains 45 newspapers and 9,000 individual editions, spanning 1828–2016, from Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada. Some of the newspapers include bilingual and Indigenous-language editions in Hawaiian, Cherokee, Navajo, and other languages. This collection provides primary source material for research into subjects including the self-determination era and American Indian Movement (AIM), education, environmentalism, land rights, and cultural representation from an Indigenous perspective.

Why should you use it?

Many of titles were founded in the 1970s when Indigenous journalism grew out of the 1973 occupation of Wounded Knee, meeting the demand for objective reporting from within Indigenous territory. In addition, the collections were developed with and made possible through the permission and contribution of the newspaper publishers and Tribal Councils concerned.

Who should use it?

Anybody interested in the reporting and perspectives of Indigenous communities in the United States and Canada.

Why use a database?

When you use a specific database, rather than a search engine or discovery tool, you often can find more relevant sources. For example, subject databases include sources about that subject only, rather than a general search engine or discovery tool that includes information about everything. This way you don’t have to wade through thousands of irrelevant results.
